Just a closeup to get an idea of the amount of work it takes to finish off a column. To repayo a column Issac first ties 2 pieces of rope to the column, one at the top and one at the bottom. He then trowels on a very rough coat of cement.
In both pictures above and below you can see the rope sticking out of the cement. He then takes a board and saws it up and down shaving off the rough edges of cement. The 2 ropes ensure that the board doesn't cut too deep in any one spot.
He repeats this process until there are no low spots left. He then adds water with a sponge and trowels the surface until it is smooth, adding alternately a bit of cement powder and splashing on a bit of water with a sponge until he achieves the polished look you see behind him. He really is an excellent craftsman.
