Today we took in the historic district of Casco Veijo. Our first stop was to get Donna a hat. The boys in the background teased her that she looked like Angelina Jolie as she struck this pose for my picture.
Casco Veijo means old city. Built and settled in 1671, after the destruction of Panama Veijo by the privateer Henry
Morgan, the historic district
of Panama City (known as "Casco Veijo", "Casco Antiguo" of "San Felipe") was conceived as a walled city to protect its settlers against future pirate attacks. |It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2003. The new Panama can be seen across the bay and from the old city you get spectacular views of the new city.
The architecture is a curious mix of new and old with great care taken to preserve the exterior of the old buildings and while creating new interiors. In a few years the whole area will take on a fresh new look as one by one the buildings are renewed.
